We've learned so much more about drugs since then

Solip and I finally got around to watching Casino Royale last Sunday. For the public record, I would like to declare that I also recognize this movie as the best Bond film yet, and that Daniel Craig is THE FUCKING MAN!

Because of my excitement over the movie, I spent an evening at a coffee shop a few weeks ago reading Ian Fleming's 1953 novel of the same name. I found a completely hilarious passage I thought was worth posting. Fleming describes two gunmen at their post behind Le Chiffre during the game of baccarat that serves as the novel's central plot. He describes the first gunman as such:

His face was wooden and grey, but his eyes flickered and gleamed like a conjurer's. His whole long body was restless and his hands shifted often on the brass rail. Bond guessed that he would kill without interest or concern for what he killed and that he would prefer strangling. He had something of Lennie in Of Mice and Men, but his inhumanity would not come from infantilism but from drugs. Marihuana, decided Bond.

Yes, I'm sure he would have strangled his victim with one of the fifty Twizzlers he would have been eating on such a night.
