Michael
Gardner and I worked at student dining while attending
Illinois State University in Normal. I don't remember
how it came up, but I eventually did sound for a few of
their gigs around town. While doing their sound
at The Coffeehouse, I decided to record their performance.
I'm rather proud of this, as I mixed the live sound
with the main faders, while mixing the recording with
the auxilliary buses and headphones straight to DAT.
I've re-EQ'd the tracks, though there was nothing I could
do about the mix. Listening again, I'm reminded
that I really had little idea how to properly use a compressor.
The volumes of the instruments have a very annoying throbbing
quality. The songs on this page are simply the ones
that came out best on my end.
The
guys from Mahogany were really nice and fun to work with.
It's too bad I wasn't able to do more with them.
Gary Muhammad came out with a solo CD in 2006 called Bean
Soup Days. If you like his playing here, you
should really check out the disc. He's a really
good singer, too.
